Caulfield Race 6: National Jockeys Trust BM78 1400m

15/07/2016: Looks a tough opening leg with a host of chances. Happy to stay with Hard Call who draws to advantage here and generally races well fresh. Is a winner this track and a winner his only other run this distance. Drops in grade here from last 3 runs and should give backers a strong sight off a good map. Camdus has to overcome a very wide draw but this Darren Weir trained 4yo looks to have talent with 3 wins from 7 runs to date and was only beaten half a length this grade and track at his last run. Strong chance if positions up well in the run, So Does He was a last start easy winner this grade at Sandown and has won here at Caulfield in the past. Goes well this distance and stakes legitimate each way claims. Sang Choi Bao could be the exotics booster. Ran really well in what looked like a much stronger 78 class the last time he ran here and was also unlucky. Form since has been OK without winning and could get smother up from gate 1 and charge home late. Caprese has been racing well this class in recent times and looked unlucky last time when 3.1 lengths adrift when 6th to Heza Ripper at this track. If breaks go his way this time can threaten for sure.

PACE COMMENTS This is a tricky race to map as there will be a couple of jockeys drawn wide who will have to make a quick decision as soon as their steed jumps. The main horses affected are Camdus, drawn 17, Box Of Frogs, drawn 15 and Sharif, drawn 18 as marginal slowness out of the barrier could be disastrous. None of the trio are leaders but I suspect at least one will have a go for the lead and Fast Approaching will join the fray to consolidate the good barrier. All told, even though I have no confirmed leader, I am expecting the pace to be solid enough early to afford the back markers a chance, if the wet track is not biased by this race.
