Caulfield Race 9: Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap 2000m

03/07/2015: After his scintillating win last start I have to select Word Of Mouth but with a couple of reservations. One, the win was on soft going as was his prior unlucky run and two, there is a class rise involved which is partly resolved with the 2kg claim for very much in form apprentice M Dee. Self Sense was second up last week and just started to get going in the last two hundred metres. He will definitely improve. Trade Commissioner was desperately unlucky to Landlocked and Faust in the Wagga Cup (both would be single figures at this level) and considering he is not really a wet tracker he reads really quite well for today’s drier track. He will get a good run off barrier six, too. Bagman on first thoughts faces a big task with 60kg and drawn an inside barrier for a chronic get back type but if D Oliver gambles for inside runs off what I suspect will be a solid pace he will be in the finish. Hioctdane is in outstanding form but he has been beating ordinary horses. As compensation he is lovely each way odds and if you pay heed to the old saying "winners keep winning" he is worth serious thought. Other chances include Ava’s Delight, Westsouthwest, River’s Lane, Spinderbella, Falago and Use The Lot.

Caulfield Race 9. RaceTime: AEST 16:44, 04/07/2015

Front Runners (1) Lord Durante, (7) River's Lane, (10) Hioctdane
On Pacers (3) Westsouthwest,(4) Self Sense, (11) Use The Lot, (14) Commanding Time.
Mid Fielders (6) Trade Commissioner, (9) Word Of Mouth, (12) Tristram's Sun, (16) Falago.
Get Back (2) Bagman, (5) Nordic Duke, (8) Ava's Delight, (13) Secessio, (15) Rebel Rising, (17) Spinderbella, (18) Diamonds At Noon.
PACE COMMENTS With the likelihood of several runners searching for the lead, and that could include a couple of my on pacers, I envisage a good, solid pace. I would be unconcerned if backing a horse that gets back: if good enough they will get their chance.
